Residential Homes Services
We hold services for residents at Summerhayes Residential Care Home in Sandford every month, and Hillbrow and Kenwyn Residential Care Homes in Crediton in alternate months.
Our worship team is made up of a local preacher from this church and a worship leader from Cheriton Fitzpaine Methodist church, with help from other members of Crediton’s congregation. These homes also have a monthly Service of Holy Communion provided by the Anglican church, and Crediton Congregational Church provides other services during the year.
Our aim is to enable residents to have a regular Christian service of worship suitable to their needs and circumstances, regardless of denomination. All residents are very welcome to come. We know that they each have differing physical and mental challenges including mobility problems, ranges of hearing and sight loss, and some have a degree of dementia. We like to spend time after the service, talking with each of the residents and building friendships, and that is of equal importance in the outreach we are blessed to be able to provide.
We create a worship centre reflecting the theme for the day, and include Bible readings, prayers, hymns, reflections, and as appropriate humour, poetry and different types of music. We try hard to be imaginative and interactive, using stimuli through colour, sound and touch.
The Bible stories we use are familiar to most people who have at some point in their lives attended a church or had some Christian religious education. We choose hymns that are well known, both traditional and more modern, and we include the Lord’s prayer which residents say with us. At the end of each service we give everyone something to remind them of the service such as a picture, Bible text or flower. At Harvest, (with the Home’s approval) it’s usually a nibble of home made scone or biscuit and at Christmas, a gold (chocolate) coin.
